Wart Virus: Causes, Symptoms & How to Steer Clear of the Skin Infection

One of the biggest misconceptions that people have is that warts are caused by the skin being in contact with frogs. These innocent creatures do not have anything to do with the development of such abnormal growth on the skin. Instead, warts are caused by a virus called HPV or Human Papilloma Virus. Here, we will take a look at how HPV causes warts to form, the symptoms that you should watch out for and how you can steer clear of the skin infection.

How HPV Turns into Warts

First, let us take a quick look at how HPV turns into warts. Here’s a preview of what happens:

  • 1. Warts may look like harmless growths on the skin – but they actually come from somewhere.
  • 2. Common warts in particular are caused by an infection in the top layer of the skin caused by viruses which are members of the HPV family.
  • 3. When there is a tiny scratch or minor wound on the skin, that serves as an opening for the virus to invade the affected area. Once HPV gets in, rapid cell growth occurs and warts are created.

There are over a hundred different types of warts and some of the most common are plantar warts, common warts, flat warts, filiform warts, palmer warts, genital warts and molluscum warts.

The good news is that even when left untreated, warts will naturally disappear after a couple of years. The only reason why people get treatment is for cosmetic reasons. Discomfort or pain are other reasons for getting treatment for warts, especially if they appear in a part of the body which gets rubbed, touched or bumped all the time.

Depending on the type of warts that you have, they can appear as abnormal skin growths the size of a pencil eraser – although they can also grow into big, rough bumps or tiny clusters.

Understand How You Can Prevent Getting the Warts Virus in the First Place

No matter what kind of skin warts it is that you have, always remember that prevention is way better than cure. Be aware that warts are obtained through direct skin-to-skin contact like shaking hands or sexual intercourse. Even the innocent act of sharing towels with someone who has warts can lead you to have the infection. To prevent your getting the virus in the first place, here are some tips to remember:

  • 1. Always wash your hands.
  • 2. When working out or swimming in public pools, bring your own towel or at least make sure that you get fresh ones.
  • 3. Wear sandals or flip-flops when taking showers in shared places like locker room or gym bathrooms. Even the simple act of stepping on floors which came in contact with the skin of someone with warts may spread the virus.
  • 4. Be careful when shaving your beard for men, or your legs for women. Viruses enter nicked or cut skin easily – so see to it that you are using clean razors every time.

By following these tips, you can steer clear of the wart virus and keep your skin free from such embarrassing imperfections.
